How You Can Help Kids Get Free Summer Meals
The hunger statistics in the U.S. are sobering—42 million Americans (nearly 1 out of 8) are hungry, and 13 million of them (1 out of 5) are children. Over 21 million kids benefit from free and reduced school meals during the school year, but only 17% participate in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program. Why so low? Most families unfortunately either don’t know about the program or don’t have the information on local sites like schools, recreation centers, playgrounds, parks, churches, and summer camps where summer meals can be found. Thankfully, WhyHunger helps fill in the informational gap with their free Summer Meals Rock for Kids program.
WHAT IS WHYHUNGER?
WhyHunger was founded in 1975 by the late musician Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres on the fundamental belief that everyone has the right to nutritious food and hunger is a solvable problem. Their social movement to change the systems, policies, and institutions that perpetuate hunger and poverty brings together grassroots organizations and communities to address the inequities of poverty. WhyHunger also connects community leaders and their stories to musicians, celebrities, activists, policy makers, funders, engaged citizens, and to each other to mobilize, educate, and change the public narrative.
